We have made a room by room cleaning schedule that includes our daily tasks. With the house cleaning schedule, we even have our kids earning screen time by doing chores! So instead, we just have a cleaning schedule and everyone helps out. With four kids, picking up after them constantly would be like brushing your teeth while eating chocolate cookies… next to impossible. And, if that snack drops on the floor, I feel safe calling ‘5-second rule’! If they build that masterpiece on the table, it is cleaned and sanitized. I want our kids to know that if they build their fort on the floor, it is clean. I like it to be tidy and I just don’t tolerate it not being clean. The overseeing child lets me know if work is questionable, and I will make the necessary corrections and instructions. These are standard chores for the main rooms we all share in the house, divided by an area assigned to each child every day of the week and one child who overlooks the work and ensures it gets done correctly. Chore jurisdictions are our next set of chores for the day. Starting when they are young and giving them age-appropriate tasks sets them up for success and accomplishment as they age. Each facet teaches them a new skill that will benefit their lives. The system of chore jurisdictions is a tool that works well for our family.
